The Detailing Manager will be responsible for a team of detailers and drafting technicians which will detail architectural and structural precast concrete elements and steel elements for production in Newton Group’s in-house production facilities. The Detailing Manager will have a wide breadth of knowledge across all building disciplines and will work with structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical and building envelope contract drawings and specifications as well as cutsheets, markups and informal sketches in order to create precise, accurate drawings, models and CNC files to produce and erect building components and systems. The Detailing Manager will get the opportunity to work with project managers, engineering, production and field staff to collaborate on phasing plans, schedules and logistics plans. The Detailing Manager will ensure projects are completed on time and on budget while supervising junior detailers to ensure work is done correctly.
Produce detailed shop drawings, BIM and CNC files (erection, assembly and parts) for in-house production per the scheduled production requirements as set out by the project managers and under supervision of the engineer of record.
Manage team of junior and intermediate drafters and detailers and be responsible for developing company drafting standards, typical system details/families, and procedures.
Detailing of architectural and structural precast concrete members including integration of all trades and disciplines such as structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection and building envelope in order to deliver a holistic, panelized product.
Detailing structural steel and miscellaneous metal elements for fabrication.
Produce precast and steel building layouts with input from structural and architectural contract drawings
Planning and scheduling detailing requirements for multiple projects.
Managing and coordination of sub contracted detailers, as required.
Manage and innovate drawing storage system and procedures both physically and digitally.
Develop innovative techniques for conveying additional information or “dimensions” into shop drawings and BIM (logistics, shipping, costs, scheduling, progress, etc) for use by various company departments
Frequently participate in part reviews in plant and occasionally on site
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience
Post-Secondary education in Civil, Architectural, Structural or Mechanical Technology and CET designation is preferred, however, less education combined with appropriate experience will be taken into consideration
Engineering degree and professional licensure is an considered an asset
5-10 years of detailing, drafting and/or construction experience.
Concrete and precast detailing experience required, structural design and analysis is considered an asset.
Steel detailing and mechanical/electrical/architectural drafting experience is considered an asset.
Previous experience with drafting/detailing using a BIM software package (Revit, Tekla or other).
Ability to read drawings is required.
Knowledge of Canadian Building Codes including Concrete and Steel design is considered an asset
Ability to produce work in a timely manner while maintaining and promoting accuracy and quality of work with high attention to detail
Previous experience with manufacturing and prefabrication preferred.
Previous management experience of up to five people.
Be a good team leader but also be willing to work hands on with a high level of detail on shop drawings and have patience for teaching junior team members.
Keen mind for optimization and “systems” thinking to promote vertical integration throughout the company
