The Structural Steel and Precast Concrete Estimator helps to lead the process of developing estimates and budgets for Design-Build, hard bid, and construction management proposals.
Responsibilities
Take on ownership and accountability for the budgets/estimates.
Prepare preliminary & conceptual estimates for Design-Build and construction management projects with use of historical data, cost database, industry cost data, and trade/supplier input.
Responsible for preparing quantity take-offs and estimated costs of materials, labour, and use of equipment required to fulfill all provisions of the contract from simple to complex.
Monitor, track and document evolution of preliminary budgets into final construction budgets ensuring clear audit trail to original budget.
Compiling an appropriate list of inclusions/exclusions for each estimate to be included in the proposal/bid/submission.
Manage the workflow of estimates for formal Tenders and RFP submissions. Such as developing a thorough understanding of drawings & specifications, developing formal questions to be submitted, reviewing addendums, etc.
Participate in risk assessment for projects by identifying potential hidden costs from unclear items, reviewing drawings & specifications for unknowns, penalty clauses, scheduling or shipping issues, etc.
Be able to communicate the project estimate in square footage and other unit cost rates compared to “typical” square footage or unit rates. Produce other reports and statistics as a Dashboard for management review.
Provide estimating support to construction teams with additional trade/supplier pricing. Ensure clarity in trade/supplier scope of work. Review details of quotes and budgets
Maintain a directory of suppliers and sub-contractors.
Expectations
Ability to work on Design-Build projects requiring the ability to work with limited drawings and know how to fill in the blanks.
Develop the ability to provide quick “high-level” estimates as well as more detailed estimates depending on what is required.
Understand construction requirements and pricing across a wide scope; Civil, Landscape, Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Finishing, etc.
Develop an understanding of the Newton Group Ltd. prefabricated building components and the costs associated with it.
Be fluent in square footage and other unit cost rates for various mid and high rise buildings (wood, concrete, precast, steel), construction assemblies, construction methods, electrical and mechanical systems.
Provide value engineering options and participate in constructability reviews with feedback on costs of construction methods.
Develop an understanding of construction schedules and sequencing. Use schedules to project Division 1 costs for project bids or budgets.
Monitor industry costs for materials & labour.
Assist with Post Project Estimating Reviews to determine accuracy of the cost database and establish estimating standards for all future estimates based on such analysis.
Help develop estimating best practices for productivity and efficiency.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
10+ years of Design-Build construction estimating experience.
Strong understanding of construction contracts, scheduling and scope of work development and tendering process for all phases of a construction project.
Working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code
Expert in Microsoft Excel.
Proficiency in other Microsoft Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and MS Project), Bluebeam.
Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently and as part of the project management team.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Effective time management and organizational skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with databasing software is considered an asset.
Experience with CostOS is considered an asset.
Experience with BIM software is considered an asset.
Experience with the CCDC14 Stipulated Design Build contract.
A valid class G driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract.
