Wilson Street Parkade
Newton Group Ltd. was the Design-Builder on the parkade in
downtown Guelph, Ontario. The parkade was designed for
496 spaces with additional space for public bike storage. The
grand lobby, which exits into the core of the downtown,
includes public restrooms, elevators and a naturally
ventilated glass stairwell.
The parkade is located in the historic downtown core of Guelph and it was important for the city to have the building match the surrounding architectural aesthetic. This was achieved with a real brick façade and false window design which still allows the building to be open-air.
The project also included the demolition of the pedestrian bridge over Norfolk Street, replacing it with the new Veterans Memorial Bridge, manufactured and installed by Newton Group. The backlit bridge has a laser cut design of poppies subtly integrated along the side to commemorate veterans of Canada.
To meet the City of Guelph’s renewable energy targets the facility is Net-Zero with a 190 kW array of over 500 roof mounted solar panels. The generated power will supply the Electric Vehicle charging stations, lights, security and parking access and revenue control equipment.
