Timing is everything – A review of the NAMHAF Facility Parking Structure Project

Updated: Mar 8, 2022

When it comes to large construction projects, we have all seen delays for one reason or another. When the Newton Group team started the New Mental Health & Addictions Facility Parking Structure project, “delays” were not in their vocabulary. Demanding deadlines offered no room for extensions, this was a project that tested the very efficiency abilities of not only the CANADACAR system but also the competencies and dedication of the Newton Group team.

With shovels hitting the ground on October 1st, 2020, the team began the task of taking 300,000 Sq. Ft. and creating just over 1000 parking stalls in a state-of-the-art new parking garage located in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The beautiful simplicity of the design made for a logical and efficient layout, with safety at its core. despite COVID19 restrictions and a microchip shortage, the team has managed to stay on schedule with this project through constant communication. “Following up is important,” Hanny Elsaifi, the project manager, explained, “you learn you need to manage projects as though you own it.”

Utilizing the CANADACAR System, an engineered and prefabricated system for parking structures, The Newton Group team provided their client with significant cost savings. With maintenance costs 90% lower than conventional parking, this design was customizable to suit the footprint needs of the client while still saving money at every stage. Both the steel fabrication and precast concrete manufacturing occur in Newton Group’s facilities. This control over production allowed the team to adapt and react quickly to any changes throughout the project, keeping everything on track and schedule.

The team spearheading this project are Hanny Elsaifi, the project manager; Sam Chamberlain as the site supervisor; Olufemi Adeniji as project coordinator; and Cam Krajcik as the design lead. President, Ed Newton has also been very hands-on throughout the project, offering expertise as needed and ensuring the team had the tools to get the job done. To date, this project produced the fastest turnaround in erecting a CANADACAR System for the Newton Group and will surely not be the last.

On target to be completed October 26, 2021, teamwork and communication at every stage of the project ensured the overall success of the New Mental Health & Addictions Facility Parking Structure project.
