The Sioux Lookout Municipal Airport Parking Structure is a new two-level parking facility designed to increase capacity at one of Northern Ontario’s most important regional transportation hubs. Delivered by Kiwi Newton under a single-source Design-Build contract, the structure will provide 200 parking spaces while adding approximately 112 spaces beyond the airport’s previous parking capacity.
The project uses the Kiwi CarPark System, combining ultra-high-performance concrete deck panels with hot-dipped galvanized structural steel. This durable panel-and-beam system was selected to provide long-term resistance to Northern Ontario’s demanding winter conditions, including snow, road salt, de-icing chemicals and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
More Than Just Airport Parking
The Sioux Lookout Municipal Airport is a critical gateway connecting Northwestern Ontario with remote First Nations, healthcare services, public safety agencies and resource-sector activity throughout Ontario’s Far North.
Many of the communities served through Sioux Lookout do not have permanent road access. Air travel is therefore essential for patients, medical personnel, families, police services, government workers and residents travelling between remote communities and larger centres.
The airport also supports mining, exploration, construction, forestry, tourism and other northern industries. Workers, consultants, equipment and urgent supplies regularly move through Sioux Lookout on their way to remote projects and communities. In this context, dependable airport parking is part of the region’s wider transportation infrastructure.
Designed for Northern Ontario
The parking layout was developed to accommodate the pickup trucks and SUVs commonly used throughout Northern Ontario. The facility includes wider parking spaces, practical drive aisles and a west-side ramp providing access to the suspended parking level.
Approximately 31 duplex block-heater receptacles will provide plug-in connections for up to 62 vehicles. The structure also includes moisture-resistant LED lighting, drainage systems, weather-resistant electrical equipment and materials selected for dependable year-round operation.
Built for Future Growth
The structure is designed to accommodate a future horizontal parking bay and an additional suspended parking level. This allows the Municipality of Sioux Lookout to expand the airport’s parking capacity as passenger traffic and regional transportation demand continue to grow.
Kiwi Newton’s integrated Design-Build and prefabrication approach allows design, permitting, manufacturing and site preparation to proceed concurrently. Structural components are manufactured off site and delivered for rapid assembly, reducing construction time and disruption at the active airport.
The Sioux Lookout Municipal Airport is more than a local airport. It is a vital gateway connecting remote northern communities with healthcare, emergency services, family networks, public services and economic opportunities throughout Ontario’s Far North.
